The publication Yayoi Kusama: A Retrospective offers a comprehensive overview of the influential oeuvre of Yayoi Kusama (b. 1929, Matsumoto), which spans more than 80 years. Accompanying the Gropius Bau's exhibition, it traces the development of Kusama's work from her early paintings and accumulative sculptures to her immersive environments. Eleven essays discuss Kusama's accomplishments in the worlds of fashion, film, art, marketing, and publishing. They reflect on Kusama's own staging of her art and offer genre-specific observations about her performances, installations, and painting series. A special focus is given to her lesser-known artistic activity in Europe, especially Germany. A diverse selection of images and archival documents feature alongside a detailed timeline of the artist's life.
