Commissioned by the owners of FIAT, the Agnelli Family, and in its time the largest car factory in the world. Designed by young architect Matté Trucks in 1923; the design of the building was extremely radical, and proved to become highly influential and impressed architects for many generations to come. Le Corbusier called it ‘one of the most impressive designs in industry’ and ‘a guideline for townplanning’. Eventually 80 different car models were made during its lifetime.

In 1982 the factory closed and redeveloped by Renzio Piano with the purpose of a public space with bustling concerthalls, theatres, shopping area’s, hotels and a beautiful museum ‘Pinacotheca Agnelli’. The latter showing works from Italian renaissance top artists to modernist works of the likes of Picasso, Matisse and Modegliani.
